Fence repairs in the Sutherland Shire
Updated October 2026

Not every fence problem needs a new fence. A leaning post, a cracked rail, a panel flattened by a falling branch or a gate that drags along the path are all routine repairs, and fixing them early is far cheaper than replacing a whole run later. If you need fence repairs in the Sutherland Shire, tell us what has gone wrong and an experienced, insured local fencer will call you back with a price.
Repairs the local fencers handle
- Leaning or snapped posts. The most common failure. Posts rot or rust at ground level, and the fence leans long before it falls. Individual posts can be dug out and replaced, or re-set in new concrete.
- Broken palings and rails. Timber fences repair one piece at a time. A dozen new palings and a rail can buy an old fence years.
- Colorbond panel swaps. Dented or blown-out sheets lift out and new ones drop in, colour-matched to the run.
- Storm damage. Panels down after a southerly buster or a falling limb. Urgent make-safe and insurance jobs are covered in detail on our storm damaged fence page.
- Gates that sag, drag or will not latch. Hinges, latches, rehanging and post re-setting. Bigger gate work lives on gates and automation.
- Pool fence compliance fixes. Gates that no longer self-close, loose glass spigots and height problems, see pool fencing.
- Boundary tidy-ups. Re-fixing fences disturbed by tree roots or soil movement, common on the Shire's sloping blocks. Retaining walls over 600mm generally need approval and are a separate job.
Underground services matter on any repair that digs. Post holes should not go in until a free Before You Dig Australia (byda.com.au) enquiry has located buried cables and pipes.
Repair or replace?
The honest test is the posts. If the posts are sound, almost anything above them is worth repairing. If several posts have rotted or rusted at ground level, you are paying repair money for a fence that will keep failing, and replacement usually wins. A good fencer will tell you which side of the line your fence sits on rather than selling you the bigger job. Repairs are typically charged for labour and materials or a small job rate rather than per metre, so guide pricing is hard to give honestly: get it looked at and quoted. For replacement pricing, see the fencing cost guide.
Shared fences and who pays
If the damaged fence sits on a boundary, repairs are usually a shared cost. Under the NSW Dividing Fences Act, adjoining owners generally share equally in the cost of repairing a sufficient dividing fence, and urgent repairs to a destroyed or damaged fence can proceed with the cost still shared. The practical path is simple: talk to your neighbour before the fencer arrives, share the quote, and keep it friendly. This is general information, not legal advice.
How the referral works
Shire Fencing is a referral service, not a repair crew. You tell us what is broken through the form, with a photo if you have one, and we pass it to an experienced, insured local fencer who works your suburb, from Caringbah to Heathcote. They call you back with a free quote, there is no obligation, and you deal with them directly.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a fence repair cost?
It depends entirely on the fault. Re-palings and latch fixes sit at the small end, post replacements in concrete cost more, and multi-panel storm damage more again. Fencers quote repairs after seeing the fence or good photos, so treat any figure before that as a guess.
Can just one Colorbond panel be replaced?
Yes. Colorbond is modular, so individual sheets, rails and posts can be swapped. Colour matching is usually straightforward on common colours, though long-weathered fences may show a slight difference against a brand-new sheet.
My neighbour's tree damaged our shared fence. Who pays?
Shared boundary fence costs are generally split equally under the NSW Dividing Fences Act, though circumstances like negligence can change the picture and insurance may come into it. Start with a conversation and a quote. General information, not legal advice.
How soon can someone come out?
Requests are passed on seven days a week and fencers respond to urgent make-safe jobs as fast as their schedule allows. For a fence down on a pool boundary or a road, say so on the form so it is treated as urgent.
